Candle & Wax Melt Care Guide
A beautiful fragrance ritual begins with thoughtful care. Whether you are lighting a J | F Candle Co. candle or warming wax melts, a few simple habits help create a cleaner, steadier, more refined home fragrance experience.
Use this guide to enjoy your candles and wax melts safely, beautifully, and with the best possible fragrance performance.
The J | F Care Ritual
- For candles: Light your first burn as received; each wick arrives pre-trimmed.
- For wax melts: Use an approved wax warmer on a stable, heat-safe surface.
- Allow candles to form a full melt pool on the first burn.
- Trim candle wicks to 1/4 inch before every burn after the first.
- Protect candles and warmers from drafts, children, pets, and flammable objects.
- Refresh wax melts when the fragrance has softened.
Candle Care
Each J | F Candle Co. candle is hand-poured in small batches with 100% domestically grown soy wax, natural hemp wicks, and premium phthalate-free fragrance oils. Proper care helps preserve the candle's appearance, fragrance, and burn quality.
Before You Light
Place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from curtains, shelves, papers, children, pets, and anything flammable. Choose a calm area where the flame will not be disturbed by moving air.
Your candle arrives with each wick pre-trimmed and ready for its first burn. After the first burn, trim each wick to approximately 1/4 inch before relighting.
Care note
No trimming is needed before the first burn. If the flame becomes tall, smoky, or unstable during later burns, extinguish the candle, let it cool, trim the wick, and relight.
The First Burn
The first burn sets the candle's memory. Light every wick as received, then allow the wax to melt evenly across the full surface before extinguishing the flame. This usually takes 2-4 hours, depending on the candle and room conditions.
Multi-Wick Candle Care
Our 12 oz candles are crafted with double wicks, while our 16 oz candles are crafted with three wicks for an elevated burn experience. Always light every wick at the same time so the wax melts evenly across the vessel.
Before every burn after the first, trim all wicks to approximately 1/4 inch. If a wick shifts after use, wait until the flame is extinguished and the wax is still soft, then gently re-center it.
During Each Burn
Burn your candle for 2-4 hours at a time. Short burns can leave wax along the sides of the vessel, while overly long burns can overheat the jar and affect fragrance performance.
Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches, and debris. A clean wax surface helps preserve the appearance of the candle as beautifully as it burns.
How to Extinguish
Use a candle snuffer when possible, or gently blow out the flame. Avoid splashing hot wax or moving the candle while the wax is liquid. Allow the vessel to cool and the wax to reset before handling, trimming, or relighting.
When to Stop Burning
Discontinue use when approximately 1/2 inch of wax remains at the bottom of the jar. Burning beyond this point can overheat the glass vessel.
Wax Melt Care
Wax melts offer a flameless way to enjoy J | F Candle Co. fragrance. They are ideal for moments when you want a steady scent experience without lighting a wick.
Use the Right Warmer
Place wax melts only in an approved wax warmer designed for melts. Set the warmer on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from children, pets, curtains, papers, and anything flammable.
Start with a Small Amount
Add one wax melt cube or a small portion at a time, depending on the size of your warmer dish and the fragrance strength you prefer. Do not overfill the warmer.
Let the Fragrance Unfold
As the wax warms, fragrance will gradually release into the room. Wax melts do not evaporate like water; the wax remains in the dish while the fragrance softens over time.
Refresh When the Scent Fades
When the fragrance is no longer noticeable, allow the wax to cool and solidify before removing it from the warmer. Follow your warmer manufacturer's instructions for safe wax removal and cleaning.
Wax melt note
Never add water to wax melts. Never leave an electric warmer on unattended, and always follow the safety instructions provided with your specific warmer.
Troubleshooting
- Candle tunneling: Burn long enough for the wax pool to reach the edges.
- Smoky candle flame: After the first burn, trim the wick to 1/4 inch and move away from drafts.
- Uneven candle wax: Use a level surface and light every wick on multi-wick candles.
- Light scent throw: Use the fragrance in a room suited to the candle or warmer size.
- Wax melt scent has faded: Allow the wax to cool, remove it safely, and refresh with new wax.
After the Final Use
Once a candle is finished and fully cooled, remove any remaining wax and wick tabs, then wash the jar with warm soapy water. Repurpose the vessel for small storage, decor, or a quiet everyday ritual of your own.
For wax melts, allow used wax to cool completely before removing it from the warmer. Clean the dish according to the warmer manufacturer's instructions before adding new wax.
Safety essentials
Never leave a burning candle or active warmer unattended. Keep candles, wax melts, and warmers away from children, pets, drafts, and flammable objects. Do not burn candles for more than 4 hours at a time.
FAQ
Do I need to trim the candle wick before the first burn?
No. Your candle arrives pre-trimmed and ready to light for its first burn.
How often should I trim the wick after that?
After the first burn, trim every wick before each burn to approximately 1/4 inch.
Can I burn only one wick on a multi-wick candle?
No. For an even melt pool, light every wick every time.
How many wax melts should I use?
Start with one cube or a small portion, depending on your warmer size and fragrance preference. Add more only if your warmer allows it and the dish is not overfilled.
When should I replace wax melts?
Replace wax melts when the fragrance has faded. The wax may still remain in the dish even after the scent has softened.
